Advancement Via Individual Determination

What’s AVID?

AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and is a program that can be used at all levels of education — elementary, secondary, and higher-education.  In Boone County Secondary Schools, all students will be experiencing AVID daily in their regular classrooms as well as taking the AVID Elective course.  Boone County administrators and teachers know that many of our students possess a desire to go to college but due to different circumstances, they do not have the opportunity to be ‘college-ready’.  AVID gives teachers and students the tools to make sure that these students can succeed on a path to college or career success.

To address the need of college and career preparedness, AVID allows students “for one class period a day to receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses.” (AVID, 2019) Administrators and teachers at Madison Middle can’t wait to see how this program will help increase individual student success.

As part of the process for helping students become more prepared for a path to college or career success, every student will be required to keep a binder.  This binder will be a zip-up binder that will be provided to the students by the school.  They will also be required to keep it organized and always have the required materials in the binder.  Check out the video below to learn more about the student binders.

AVID Binders?

AVID schools like MMS support students by helping them to organize their materials and resources.  This is done through a one-binder system, rather than binders for every class.  This helps students have all the materials necessary to study for quizzes and tests and to finish homework assignments in one place.  It also ensures that they don’t forget materials at school that they need at home. According to AVID, one of the most important tools for academic success is the ability to keep materials and assignments organized. It is for this reason that the binder is a school-wide project for all classes and class materials.  Each teacher can determine what their section of the binder will contain, but all materials are to be kept in one binder.  These binders will be a large portion of the grade for the students’ AVID Elective.

At MMS, the students will be provided:

  • A Zip-up binder
  • Pencil Pouch
  • Dividers
  • Cornell Note Paper
  • Hi-lighters
  • Agenda
